the studio project

return to main project gallery

mattress factory museum, pittsburgh

november 2003 - june 2004

For this project, I decided to design and build a new studio suited for my installation space and to move into and use my exhibition space as my

functional studio for the run of the show. I was interested in what might happen if I opened up the process of making artwork, the part of being an

artist that generally happens in solitude, and allowed this to happen in the public space of the museum. I am interested to see what happens to my

work, how it shifts, how it is informed, how it develops with this addition of daily interaction and conversation with visitors of all ages and

backgrounds.  I will continue the process of being an artist, working on shows to happen in other locations, changed only by the influence of a new

work context. I was looking for an approach to an exhibition that would continue to be active for me as an artist during the entire show (usually the

opening marks the completion of active development) and to do something that would continually evolve and shift into new things over time.

“My work is less about things in the gallery and more about the people I’ve met, had a conversation with, talked about things with, and looked at

things with”

-Rikrit Tiravanij

“If you see yourself as an artist and you function in a studio…you sit in a chair or you pace around. And then the question goes back to what is

art? And art is what an artist does, just sitting around the studio.”

-Bruce Nauman
